Our History

It was back in 1954, while selling barbeque from the back of his Super Test gas station, that Elton Johnson began the tradition of preparing and serving Johnson's traditional southern food, as the word spread, the demand grew and it soon became the family's daily work to present great southern food to locals throughout central Florida. Some of the daily offerings included: Ribs, Pot Roast, Catfish, and Fried Chicken along with Collards, Peas, and Mac n' Cheese.

Eventually, the family created Grandpa Johnson's Barbeque which continues to thrive today as Johnson Barbeque, a Plant City institution located at the State Farmer's Market. Johnson Barbeque is devoted to serving authentic oak-smoked Ribs, Beef, Pork and Chicken in a gathering place that draws everyone from local growers to the state Governor.

While continuing to stay true to the family recipes, Johnson Barbeque is modernizing the proud tradition of southern barbeque with specialties like Fried Smoked Chicken, BBQ Tacos and Smoked Ribeye Steaks. Sauces and rubs are still homemade, and the smokers are working 24 hours a day to ensure that your cut of meat is fresh, juicy and tasty.

At Johnson Barbeque, we are committed to providing you handcrafted southern barbeque in a relaxed neighborhood atmosphere. And we continue to believe today, as Elton Johnson did in 1954. That a love of great food and especially authentic barbeque is something shared by all.
